Tell me about your triathlon history & how you got started in the sport...
After moving to the city upon completion of school, I was seeking a
way to redefine my life and take on new challenges. Triathlon offered
me not only these things, but also the opportunity to meet new people
and explore new places. I have a background in swimming however I did
not begin distance training until 2006. After meeting a few members
of the SBR team in the shop, I bought my first road bike and began
training for triathlons. Upon completing my first biathlon in Central
Park I was hooked. The support of the people at SBR gave me the
confidence to take on distances that I had never considered within my
reach.
Looking ahead, what athletic goals have you set for yourself in 2008 ...
After a great year of Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons in 2007, I am looking forward to taking on the challenge Half-Ironman races this year. I am fortunate to have so many talented teammates and I want to make them proud. My goal for each race is simply to be faster than my last. I want to dedicate this season to my loving family. Seeing you guys at the races is such a thrill.
What is your favorite thing about competing in triathlons?
My favorite part is not the competition, but the training. I have
met so many great people along the way and have had a terrific time
whether it was going out for rides on beautiful sunny days or whether
it was trudging along through freezing snow storms. The races are a
nice bonus.
What gets you motivated for a big race, or hard training session?
I think about race day. I want to be able to honestly answer that I
did my best to prepare for the race. I can only expect great results
if I put great effort in training.
What's your favorite meal to eat before and after a big race?
Before a race I like to eat as little as possible. Give me some
Amino Vital and a Clif Bar. After a race it is off to sushi paradise.
What is the best piece of advice you have for other triathletes?
Ask as many questions as you can before the big day because after the
horn sounds, it's time to boogie. Training makes you stronger. Learn
to love training and race day will seem like pure joy. Be honest with
yourself. Are you giving it your best?
What other hobbies do you enjoy?
As an architect, my passion is traveling and exploring cities. I love
to search neighborhoods and discover the essence of what makes them
unique, from the architecture to the culinary scene.
Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself?
When I was two years old, I escaped from my house and ended up on the
bottom of my family's swimming pool. After a week in a coma, I
miraculously awoke. Needless to say, many, many swim lessons
followed.
