Tell me about your triathlon history & how you got started in the sport...
This is my 4th year in the sport. I got started because I was a grade A couch potato. To be honest, I got sick of myself, and I set the goal of doing a triathlon. I never figured that it would lead to such a rich experience.
Looking ahead, what athletic goals have you set for yourself in 2008 ...
I have been spending the off season focused on my cycling, with two goals in mind. The first is that I hope to achieve my fastest bike splits to date. The second goal involved bicycle racing. I plan to start racing in central park this season, and I want to do as well as I can. Therefore, my second goal is to train as hard, and as properly as I can. That way I will be able to feel good about my results, weather finishing first or last.
What is your favorite thing about competing in triathlons?
To be honest, the training is my favorite part. Races are great, but the day in day out training is what I really dig. I love the time to myself, as well as the time spent training with others. It makes me feel wonderful. I could never give it up.
What gets you motivated for a big race, or hard training session?
My motivation for training hard is always the thought of my big event. I imagine being on the course on race day when I need a mental boost. As for race day, I think of all the time I have invested, and that always helps me push thru.
What's your favorite meal to eat before and after a big race?
Before a race I eat exactly what I eat during a regular week. The thing I want to avoid is any change from my regular diet. I hate race day surprises if you know what I mean. After a race, I crave Captain Crunch Peanut Butter Cereal. It's the one and only time I eat it.
What other hobbies do you enjoy?
Triathlon is my hobby. With a young daughter and wonderful wife, and a busy career, I have very little additional time.
What is the best piece of advice you have for other triathletes?
Build your base slowly and carefully. Doing it this way will lead to injury free triathlons.
