Tell me about your triathlon history & how you got started in the sport...
Well in December 2003 I showed up to my company's holiday party and broke my belt and ripped my pants in front of an audience. In preceding three years, I managed to pack on 60 pounds and had to hold my breath just to tie my shoes. Needless to say, I was embarrassed and fed up with my body and outlook on life and I went on a rampage... 2-3 work out per day, weights/cardio and lost 70 pounds in 5 months. In the fall of 2005, a friend of mine at work asked me if I had ever done biathlons (duathlons) before? No... so I went out, bought a road bike and off I went to brick land.
The swim/triathlon component was added in July 2005. I found out two weeks before my first sprint triathlon I didn't know how to swim so I went to SBR - my first visit at the store ever... and shared my tale of woe with Mike. He hooked me up with a wet suit and the rest is history. When you meet me, ask me about my "wounded seal " story!
Looking ahead, what athletic goals have you set for yourself in 2008 ...
I have the need… the need for speed! My big goal this year is to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Let’s see for an old guy like me – that translates to a 3:30 or 8:00 min/mi pace. The “A” race for that will be the Nissan Buffalo Marathon on Memorial Day weekend.
The second goal for this year is to complete my first Ironman ever! I’ll be participating in Ironman Lake Placid in July! I’ll be shooting for a 13:30
What is your favorite thing about competing in triathlons?
Before I started out in triathlons, I never understood the meaning of being "in-the-zone ". I totally get it now! I love how I can tune out and absolutely focus on my mind, body and spirit. I love the camaraderie of the sport and the new friends that I've made.
What gets you motivated for a big race, or hard training session?
It's the reward after the race. After a big race or a long training session, I like to treat myself to a nice manicure/pedicure (no nail polish please - yes I am very secure in my manhood) and then a nice hour to 1.5 hour long massage - an of course, that ice cream ;)
What's your favorite meal to eat before and after a big race?
Before a race? Just something simple - toast w/jelly, eggs, bacon, home fries and juice. After a big race? A nice pint of Haagen Daz - anything with chocolate.
What is the best piece of advice you have for other triathletes?
To Prevail, you must:
1) Have a Purpose.
2) Have a Plan.
3) Be Persistent.
4) Perform beyond your Potential.
5) ... then enjoy a Perk... then repeat step one and share the love.
