Is there one word that describes the joy you receive from your sport?
Accomplishment
How did you become interested in your sport?
Several friends told me about St. Croix, so I signed up to do the race with them. Everyone dropped out last minute, so I went alone, had a great time, and in the process became addicted.
What other hobbies do you enjoy?
Exploring the world, learning about different cultures, spending time outdoors hiking, canoeing or climbing, watching reality TV.
What's your favorite meal to eat before and after a big race?
Whatever I feel like or can manage to eat. Before: usually pb&j on whole wheat toast with a calorie drink. After: tomato & mozzarella, watermelon, grapes.
Do you have a favorite song, favorite music group, or is there music you like to train to, or is there a certain song that plays in your head when you race or ride?
I listen to just about anything, but my favorite is dance music.
Do you have a personal motto?
Even if I'm going through a difficult situation, whether it's while I'm racing, training, or in life, I try to stay positive. I remind myself how fortunate I am for everything I have and how much stronger and smarter I'll be when it's over. Maybe it's the Eastern European in me because no matter how much I'm suffering, I don't ease up or give up.
The most memorable and meaningful race you've been in and why?
Ironman World Championship 2005 in Kona, Hawaii. This was my second Ironman. My first was in Korea two months prior. Having an ironman under my belt, I knew how hard I can push and what to expect. Except that this race threw in a variety of surprises, from a bike problem to twisting my ankle at mile 1 of the run. I experienced some dark moments while on that marathon. But I never let the setbacks get to me and I just kept going. Crossing the finish line 30 minutes faster than in Korea was a very proud moment for me. I have never physically felt this bad in my life, that marathon hurt, but I was so thrilled with pushing through it and achieving a personal best. The tears flowed from the intense mental and physical challenge I just completed. The tears stopped quickly, but the proud smile still remains.
